Relax on Father's Day

We went for a walk on Father's Day and my father-in-law chose to soak up the sunshine. I spotted the potential and composed this shot.

Iron Shed

Whilst out walking with the dog near Longformacus we stumbled across this lovely, old, rusty iron shed. I’m trying to experiment with B&W and duotones and I thought this was an ideal subject for it.

Another shot from Jodie's studio shoot. I like this one in particular because she has her mouth open - it seems to make a better dog portrait somehow. More shots and a description of my set up can be found on my new blog.

Festive Jodie

I've recently invested in some cool new photography gear including a Bowens Studio Lighting kit (Gemini Digital 500/500 kit), Manfrotto background support, white seemless paper, black muslin, Lastolite 5-in-1 bottletop reflector and last (but not least) a gorgeous Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L.

I've got a lot to learn about studio photography, but here's a photo I put together for Lynsey's blog. A very festive Jodie! I hope I have more to share when I find time.

We went for a walk to Hume Castle today. With my 70-200mm f/4L at 200mm I captured Jodie as she paused for a breath in the lovely evening sun.

I had quite a long time before my flight home so I walked around the airport looking for some interesting things to photograph. With my 70-200mm f/4L I thought this silhouette looked quite cool as I pressed the shutter just before the girls reached the escalator.

Art and Politics

This is an interesting image to me. It shows competing graffiti of art and politics on a wall in Neve Tzedek (the oldest part of Tel Aviv). The graffiti in blue with the 'Star of David' translates to "The Nation of Israel Lives" and the graffiti in black crossing out the star adds something along the lines of "We will conquer"; a reminder of the conflict the land and its people are suffering.

I discovered a photograph of the same wall on Flickr, which was taken in July 2006 - notice the graffiti in black was not there at that time...

Here's the top of the Mosque Tower at 180mm of my 70-200mm f/4L. The quality of light and sharpness of the lens created an image I really like.

I spotted an appealing, rustic gate in old Jaffa. This area was strangely quiet and eerie with very few people around.

A business trip allowed me to spend a week in Tel Aviv, Israel this month. I arrived at the weekend, so I had a couple of days to explore the old parts of the city (most of it is very modern, which doesn’t really give me much photographic inspiration).

This is a shot of a Mosque tower in Jaffa. I spotted a good vantage point early in the day, and then returned at dusk to capture the perfect light. I also have some nice silhouette shots that I’ll post soon.

More shots from Israel will follow here on the photoblog.

Cow Over the Hill

Whilst walking not far from home, we approached a field of young cattle. Through the viewfinder of my camera, I watched as every cow scarpered over the hill. All of them disappeared out of view, except for one that stopped to look back at us. It was the perfect opportunity for a 'Zen' composition with plenty of negative space!

"What are you doing down there!?"

I like to try to capture our yellow lab, Jodie, from unusual angles that create a different dog portrait from the norm. A handy thing about our garden is that it is on different levels, which allows me to shoot Jodie at her level or, in this case, below her level. I used my only wide angle lens (the 350D kit lens, which I'm dying to replace!) to ensure that I captured plenty of our lovely wall and beautiful blue sky to create an interesting background. The wide angle distortion also adds to the unusual perspective to create a different look. I used a slightly narrow aperture to keep a bit more DOF (but not too much), then I made a funny noise to make her tilt her head in a cute way! The only annoying thing, technically, is the shadow on the left of her face... Lightroom's fill light works wonders though!
